On the other side of the Atlantic, DAFs have been in existence since the 1930s and have combined assets of more than $80bn in assets under management. They have attracted high profile donors including Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan who gave away $1bn worth of Facebook shares to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation.

The Foundation Center and the Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP) have recently announced the fourth edition of their annual research report, Measuring the State of Disaster Philanthropy 2017: Data to Drive Decisions.

The new report documents $23 billion dollars given in private, public, corporate, and individual disaster-related capacity, to address major disasters and humanitarian crises that affected millions globally in 2015.

Impact measurement has come a long way since NPC was set up 15 years ago. From inception to today, we have maintained our forensic focus on the measurement of outcomes and impact. But there is still much more work to do. We still are not finding consistent evidence that charities are using the data that they are carefully collecting to make changes to their programmes and services.
