The State of Our Sector Is Resilient

I am deeply grateful to the thousands of you who raised your voices to tell the country what’s at stake by taking the 2018 State of the Nonprofit Sector Survey. For the eighth time, NFF is proud to publish this collective megaphone, which has become a widely cited barometer of U.S. nonprofits’ financial and operational health, and a crucial evidence base for a wide array of sector funding discussions.

Here is what we heard from almost 3,400 of you, leaders of nonprofits large and small that address many issues on many community frontlines across all 50 states.


NPO Leaders: This Is So Worth 25 Minutes of Your Time

As nonprofit leaders, we have a responsibility to show the country what’s working and what’s at stake on the frontlines of America’s most vulnerable communities. But social-sector hard data is sparse at best, and real-time data is even rarer. The longer our sector remains an outlier in a data-driven world, the greater the opportunity cost—and the greater the risk that others will inappropriately use what numbers there are to justify budget cuts and other misguided decisions.


So, Why All This Fuss about Outcomes and Results?

You are likely not alone if you are wondering why we have written a book about the potential to orient our social system around results and outcomes. Because isn’t that what it’s already about? Don’t we already provide funding to hospitals to keep people healthy, to homeless shelters to end homelessness, to childcare centers to prepare children for a fruitful life, and to job training programs to find people permanent employment?
