Kansas City’s Nonprofit Search Turns 10

Kansas City’s nonprofit search made its debut on the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation’s website on October 20, 2003. As we celebrate 10 years, we thought we’d look back at the history of the tool, previously known as DonorEdge.

Celebratory DECountless hours of work went into creating DonorEdge. The Community Foundation solicited input from donors, nonprofits and community leaders; researched community needs; and reviewed the characteristics that drive high-performing nonprofits. The team incorporated the findings into a robust, user-friendly search tool, and DonorEdge was born.

For the first time, donors had access to a wealth of knowledge about local nonprofits, including detailed financial, operational and programmatic measurements—in one place. Information collection was (and still is) overseen by trained Community Foundation professionals and is updated at least once a year.

Eventually, other community foundations started to take notice of DonorEdge. We worked with them to adopt the technology for their own communities. Today, more than a dozen community foundations across the country manage their own nonprofit databases, offering their donors detailed information about charities in their regions.

In November 2008, GuideStar became the technology service provider for all of the DonorEdge sites, and it continues to be a valued partner as more community foundations join the movement.

As any good online resource should, Kansas City’s nonprofit search has evolved to meet the changing needs of its users, but it remains a powerful resource to inform, empower and enrich charitable giving in Kansas City.

We’re proud to be the original innovators behind what is now a national effort to make us all more effective charitable givers, but we know we couldn’t have done it without the support of our local nonprofit community. We applaud and thank the more than 600 organizations that have joined us on this journey!

In honor of the 10th anniversary of Kansas City’s nonprofit search, we invite you to take few moments to peruse the database and peek at a favorite nonprofit, or perhaps discover a new charity. If it’s been nearly a decade since you last visited, you might be surprised at what you’ll find.

Jacob Harold, president and CEO of GuideStar, shared some kind words in celebration of this milestone.

A decade ago, the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation embarked on a new strategy to organize information about nonprofits in the Greater Kansas City community. The hope was that the right technology platform would help donors learn about the nonprofits, increase charitable giving, and help to weave together the nonprofit community in the region. And I’m glad to say that’s just what happened.

GuideStar was thrilled and honored when the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation and other community foundations asked GuideStar in 2007 to help take DonorEdge to the next level. Now, 16 of the nation’s leading community foundation are using the platform.

We’re excited to see where the next decade takes this platform and how this important work continues to drive positive social change. Looking back after ten years, we’re especially aware that the roots of this are in Kansas City -- and thankful to the visionaries who launched DonorEdge.
