On Tuesday, May 6, hundreds of communities across the country will engage in Give Local America, a day of online giving celebrating local the 100th anniversary of community foundations.
Kimbia, the creator of an omni-channel online fundraising platform, is driving this effort and has provided a backbone of creativity and support to energize participating communities as they rally around citizen philanthropy.
Here in Sarasota, Florida, we couldn’t be more thrilled that our Giving Challenge is not just a day of giving, but a day of informed giving. Together with GuideStar and other foundation partners, the Community Foundation of Sarasota County supports a local nonprofit knowledge base to help donors of all levels understand their local choices for giving.
In the midst of so many concurrent appeals by organizations of all sizes, our community is in a high state of excitement around the Giving Challenge. Yet it has never been more apparent that our choices are many and we need good information to make the right individual decisions about where to give.
With www.thegivingpartner.org, each of us is empowered with information at our fingertips. Anyone can determine how many animal welfare organizations are in our community and how they are different, for example. Anyone can understand the programmatic impact, needs, leadership, financial history and organizational goals for each nonprofit. The information is publicly shared, in a format allowing donors to tap into what is most important to them.
Recently, we have listened with interest to the buzz around what motivates donors—whether the ultimate decision to give rests in the head or the heart. While no one can deny that emotions play a central role in human nature, our experience working with hundreds of donors has demonstrated repeatedly that many of those who are passionate about a cause also want to know that their dollars are making the biggest impact.
This truth is illuminated when nonprofit knowledge becomes accessible, as it is today with our GuideStar-hosted DonorEdge tool, The Giving Partner.
As our country embarks on a celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Community Foundations, let’s celebrate our advancements in sharing community knowledge on platforms available to everyone.
