Updating your GuideStar Nonprofit Profile ensures that prospective donors and funders will find the accurate, timely information they need about your organization. So how can you maximize the potential of your profile? Glad you asked.
As you may have heard, we recently launched the our brand new, completely redesigned GuideStar Nonprofit Profiles. Our new profiles display your information in more engaging ways and make it easier for donors and funders to learn about your organization.
Follow these five steps to set the groundwork for a stellar GuideStar Nonprofit Profile:
Keep that profile contact information up to date.
When you fully update your organization’s GuideStar Nonprofit Profile, GuideStar’s 7 million annual visitors are able to see the full, complete picture of your work.
But what if they have questions? What if they want to donate? Or volunteer? Or contact you to share comments?
You get the picture. Make sure the contact information in your Nonprofit Profile information is always up to date with the accurate: mailing address, general e-mail address, website, social media handles and phone number.
Think big picture: who, internally, should be able to update your profile?
You’ve got fundraising efforts over in Development, press releases and communications over in Marketing. Success metrics might come from your Programs team and staff, and diversity information might come from your Human Resources colleagues. In other words, painting a complete picture of your organization might require information from different parts of your organization.
Why not task your teammates with updating their respective areas? Since they know them intimately, the information they provide will be the most powerful.
Team work makes the dream work, right?
Make sure you can always hear from us: add an Assigned Manager to your organization’s profile under a general e-mail (ex: info@YourNonprofit.org)
We’re constantly thinking about new features to add to our Nonprofit Profiles, and we want to be sure to let you know about them. Sometimes, this might involve a quick task like registering for a helpful demo or webinar. What happens if you’re out of town? Or maybe you switch roles in your organization?
Adding a general e-mail line for your organization as an Assigned Manger with its own login will ensure that your organization always has access to its profile and that we can always reach you with important information.
Update your profile regularly!
Did you know that your participation level expires 24 months after your last update? That’s right—24 months, and it comes faster than you might think. Assuming you’ve achieved Steps 3 and 4, we’ll be in touch to remind you when it’s time to update, but your organization is constantly making progress toward your mission, right? Make sure your profile shows that!
Have new information about a project you’ve been working on? Update!
Have new staff or board member information to share? Update!
That beautiful new annual report needs to be seen, right? Update!
We encourage you to update your profile regularly to showcase your progress and announce recent changes at your organization.
Upload your Form 990 when you have it completed.
It can take up to six months for us to receive your latest Form 990 form the IRS. Don’t make potential donors and funders wait that long to see your return— upload a copy to your GuideStar Nonprofit Profile so that visitors will always have access to your most recent 990.
Bonus Tip: Share your achievement!
Have you signaled your organization’s commitment to transparency by updating your profile to one of our participation levels? If so, share this accomplishment with your social media followers! The Outreach Tool Kit (available through the Profile Update Tool) has loads of sample Tweets, Facebook posts, and more to get you started.
And there you have it. Complete these five (plus one) steps, and you’ll be well on your way to a stellar GuideStar Nonprofit Profile.
