Sector leaders unite to share insights about results, outcomes, and impact
Today Charity Navigator and GuideStar have launched their first-ever collaboration for publishing charity results and progress data. The new initiative will allow the two industry giants to work together and advance the discussion of impact measurement among nonprofit organizations while minimizing burden on nonprofits.
On Giving Tuesday (Nov 28, 2017), Charity Navigator will publish results information prepared by charities and gathered by GuideStar. Gold and Platinum GuideStar Seal of Transparency holders will have their results and programmatic information published on their Charity Navigator profile pages for donors to review.
This is the first time in the more than 15-year history of these organizations that Charity Navigator and GuideStar have partnered to share information. The collaboration will make it easier for charities to share their results and impact-related information with the largest possible audience, reaching a combined 20 million people each year. The results of this collaboration will be evaluated and reported back to the sector.
GuideStar is the largest source of nonprofit information and has collected results information from more than 13,000 nonprofits. Charity Navigator is the largest independent evaluator and rater of nonprofits, analyzing 9,000 organizations. Some 2,000 nonprofits are profiled on both sites, and this partnership should increase that number significantly. This initiative will include other impact-focused leaders, including Classy's “Progress” framework, used to recognize programmatic performance for the Classy Awards, and the GlobalGiving “GG Rewards” system.
“Collaborating with the sector to obtain and publish impact-related data is an exciting opportunity for both donors and nonprofits. The data won’t impact a charity’s ratings on Charity Navigator, but it does signal to all that the importance of sharing impact-related information is the next phase of accountability and transparency for public charities,” said Michael Thatcher, CEO of Charity Navigator. “The work GuideStar has done in collecting this data positions them as an ideal partner for us. We are delighted to be driving this innovation alongside and in close collaboration with them.”
“This partnership is a step away from the Overhead Myth,” said Jacob Harold, president and CEO of GuideStar. “It’s very encouraging to see Charity Navigator seeking out and sharing data that speaks to impact nonprofits are having on their missions. Simply put, this partnership will help donors make better decisions. What’s more, this data sharing allows nonprofits to maintain their focus on their missions.”
A sector-wide webinar is planned for September 21, 2017. Additional information and registration information for the webinar are available at Charity Navigator.org/Webinar. Organizations can claim and update their GuideStar Nonprofit Profiles by going to guidestar.org/update.
The deadline for nonprofits to update this information on their GuideStar Nonprofit Profiles in order to be included on Charity Navigator’s site on Giving Tuesday is October 5, 2017.
