Thirty-five years ago, just a year after he started making and bottling salad dressing for friends, Paul Newman launched Newman’s Own, the company based around his homemade recipe with the goal of giving all the profits to charity. That first year turned out to be more profitable than Paul could have imagined—the company made over $300,000 and Paul achieved his vision of “giving it all away,” funding 30 charitable organizations in year one. Now the company has more than 300 products, supporting about 600 grantees each year, with 100% of the profits helping charities around the world. An incredible feat, to create a business model like that and have it not only be sustainable, but thriving over three decades later.
In honor of Newman’s Own’s 35th anniversary, Newman’s Own Foundation will make $30 million in donations this year alone, including grants to 15 of its very first grantees. This anniversary marks another significant milestone: by the end of 2017 Newman’s Own will have made over $500 million in total charitable contributions.
Some of these donations, to the tune of $500,000, comes in the form of the Newman’s Own Foundation Holiday Challenge, a crowdfunded holiday giving campaign that leaves the grantmaking up to the masses and is open to any qualifying 501(c)(3).
“We’re so proud of the impact of our founder, Paul Newman, our organization, and the thousands of nonprofits we’ve supported,” said Kelly Giordano, Managing Director of Newman's Own Foundation. “To make 2017 even more special, we’re supporting an amazing campaign for the holiday season. We’ve teamed up with CrowdRise on the Newman’s Own Foundation $500k Holiday Challenge, and we’re so thrilled to be able to share it with the GuideStar community.”
In 2005, the company launched Newman’s Own Foundation to continue Paul’s philanthropic legacy, with a clear and unambiguous model of donating all net profits and royalties from the sale of Newman’s Own products to charity. Paul was a firm believer in the idea that every person, through the power of philanthropy, has the potential to make a difference. The Challenge, in many ways, is an extension of Paul’s vision of personal philanthropy.
Since 2012, with the creation of #GivingTuesday, Newman’s Own Foundation has been powering holiday giving for their grantees, supporting their efforts by offering matching donations. This year, the Challenge will allow the Foundation to go bigger, deeper, and broader, to fund more organizations, and to enable these organizations to support their year-end campaigns to turn more online donors into online fundraisers.
Newman’s Own Foundation works with organizations to ensure success over the long term through support for capacity building and program expansion. In particular, the Foundation funds organizations or programs where foundation resources have the potential for significant impact on their efforts, typically small to mid-size organizations/programs that are poised for growth.
The Holiday Challenge is an effort to deepen and broaden this support, providing organizations with new crowdfunding tools and skills, while offering foundation resources that will further support their growth. It also aligns directly with Newman’s commitment to encourage philanthropy by leveraging Newman’s Own Foundation resources to stimulate giving from other sources and help build a global philanthropic community.
We here at CrowdRise are grateful to Newman’s Own for their 35-year commitment to their inspirational model and for their support for some of the most innovative nonprofits and programming in the world. We hope the GuideStar nonprofit community will join us and Newman’s Own Foundation for this amazing opportunity.
