Hundreds of partners rely on our APIs (application programming interfaces) to integrate GuideStar data into their websites and applications. Last year, we proudly released our next generation APIs. We’d completely rebuilt them to provide more powerful searches and more in-depth information. Our customers overwhelmingly embraced these enhancements.
Today, we’re excited to announce additional upgrades to two of our APIs. We’ve added more information, some of it available only through GuideStar, and added new filters so your users can find information in new ways.
In addition to these upgrades being included for new users, they are available to current users of GuideStar Essentials and Premier APIs at no additional cost.
Our most popular API now:
Lets you display nonprofit logos in your application or platform.
Allows you to confine your search to nonprofits that are in good standing with the IRS. Use the new most current Business Master File (BMF) and IRS Publication 78 filters to find these organizations.
Lets you to identify specific types of nonprofits. Use the new foundation code filter to limit your search to 501(c)(3) public charities, private nonoperating foundations, and more.
Allows you to work more efficiently. We’ve also integrated the most up-to-date search functionality into our API.
Our most powerful API includes everything added to the Essentials API, plus several new data fields:
IRS Form 990-EZ financials. Get insight into smaller organizations—those with gross receipts under $200,000 and assets under $500,000—as well as larger ones.
New financial fields. We’ve added unrestricted net assets, net fixed assets, and mortgage data.
Financial health metrics. View analyses of individual nonprofits’ financial health over five years. (Available only for organizations that file the full Form 990, i.e., those with gross receipts of $200,000 or more or assets of $500,000 or more.)
Financial trends analysis. Get a snapshot of key financial trends and ratios for individual nonprofits, drawn from up to five years of the most recent Form 990 data available. (Available only for nonprofits that file the full 990.)
New data provided directly to GuideStar by nonprofits.
Links to documents nonprofits have shared about their impact.
Demographic data nonprofits have shared about their boards, staffs, and senior staffs. Find information on gender identity, race and ethnicity, sexual orientation, and disability status.
Additional BMF data. Learn when an organization first appeared in the BMF as well as the date of the BMF in which it was last listed.
Link to GuideStar Pro PDF. Access a standalone PDF report containing financial data, programs and results information, operation and employee data, and links to vital documents. (Available only for nonprofits that file the full Form 990.)
Note: at this time, there are no changes to the Charity Check and Schools APIs.
How You Can Access the Enhanced APIs
If you’re already an Essentials API or Premier API customer, you’ll need to update the URL(s) you use to call data from the GuideStar database. To get your new URLs, contact firstname.lastname@example.org. FYI, it’s a good idea to change the URLs, because the links you’re currently using will only be supported through January 31, 2020.
If you’re not already an API customer and want to know more, check out our API page. And, if you’re ready to talk to one of our nonprofit data experts, just fill out this form, and someone will be in touch shortly.
We look forward to your feedback on v. 2 of our APIs.
