For more than a decade, GuideStar has supported academic exploration of the nonprofit sector. GuideStar for Education gives collegiate faculty, students, and unsponsored researchers free or discounted access to GuideStar Premium. In 2017 alone, we shared $1.8 million worth of services through this program. GuideStar Library Services enables university libraries to provide patrons with on-site or remote access to GuideStar Pro at a price far below the cost of multiple individual subscriptions.
These activities are all part of our service as a 501(c)(3) public charity. They advance our mission of providing information to help people understand the nonprofit sector better. Just as 99.9 percent of our visitors use our database for free, members of the academy can access in-depth nonprofit information at little or no charge.
Today we’re excited to launch another resource for academic users: deeply discounted data sets that enable faculty, students, and researchers to look at the sector as a whole.
Meet Research Fundamentals and Research Fundamentals Plus
Working in partnership with DataLake Nonprofit Research, we’ve created two deeply discounted data sets especially for faculty, students, and researchers. Both data sets:
- Cover fiscal year 2015
- Are drawn from Forms 990 and 990-EZ
- Combine publicly available electronic sources and paper Form 990 filings
The two data sets differ in the number of organizations and number of fields they include. Their prices reflect these differences:
- Research Fundamentals
- 45 fields (see the data dictionary for specifics)
- 429,000 public charities
- $1,500 ($1,000 for persons from an institution with a Library Services subscription)
- Research Fundamentals Plus
- 350 fields (see the data dictionary for specifics)
- 234,000 public charities
- $2,000 ($1,500 for persons from an institution with a Library Services subscription)
How to Purchase the Data Sets
To apply to purchase one or both data sets, visit the Data Sets for Research landing page and click one of the Apply Now buttons. A GuideStar employee will email you within two (2) working days. If your application is approved, the email will include instructions for buying the data set(s). If your application is not approved, the email will discuss other options available to you.
We look forward to seeing the research our academic users produce from this data.
