#GivingTuesday is only a few weeks away. While many nonprofits are ramping up their appeals for the occasion, others are wondering whether it’s worth making a fundraising push right after Thanksgiving and a month before the biggest fundraising days of the year. Smaller nonprofits may worry that their appeals will be crowded out by larger, more tech-savvy organizations, but those worries are misplaced. #GivingTuesday is an occasion that celebrates all charitable organizations, and preparing for the day isn’t as big a deal as it seems. Here’s why your nonprofit should get involved this #GivingTuesday.
Prepping for #GivingTuesday doesn’t have to be hard. There are tons of free tools out there that nonprofits can use to create beautiful fundraising pages and graphics, collaborate with their team on appeals, and schedule social media and email asks to go out before and on #GivingTuesday. Most nonprofits end up recycling tried and true appeals from the past year, so feel free to retool an old campaign by making a few tweaks and reusing it on your email list and social followers.
A Helping Hand
#GivingTuesday was started by two nonprofit organizations, 92Y and the United Nations Foundation, that maintain an amazing website full of incisive insights on past years, helpful tips for this year, professional logos and imagery any nonprofit can use for their campaign, and much more. While the site won’t be able to hold your hand all the way through the process of making #GivingTuesday appeals, it can be a big help for nonprofits just getting started. Check out the #GivingTuesday toolkit for fundraising ideas, case studies from past years, and much, much more.
Wouldn’t it be incredible to get a jumpstart on year-end giving? That’s the whole point of #GivingTuesday, which has become one of the biggest fundraising days of the year. While nonprofits have varying success on the big day, everyone gets a headstart on year-end fundraising. Even if you barely raise any money, your organization will benefit from preparing for the year-end fundraising rush a bit earlier than usual by nailing your appeal, making potential supporters more aware of your work, and informing donors early about your big year-end push.
#GivingTuesday is a huge opportunity for nonprofits that typically don’t receive much attention on social media or from local media. The hashtag is already going viral on Twitter, and the more your organization uses it, the better odds you have of appearing in a potential donor’s news feed. Plus, if you come up with an innovative, fun campaign, there’s a good chance you could be featured on the #GivingTuesday website, or even in local or national news outlets. It’s not every day that you get a chance to boost your brand like this.
Donations and Matches
Last year, nonprofits raised over $300 million dollars on #GivingTuesday from more than 2 million donors. That is an enormous sum of money, and unless your organization participates, you’ll completely miss out on it. You could even introduce a donor to your organization on #GivingTuesday and end up with a monthly sustainer who gives all year long. Another thing to keep in mind is donation matching. A number of large companies like Facebook and PayPal are offering #GivingTuesday matches, but you can also approach a small- or medium-sized business in your community and ask for a donation that matches your #GivingTuesday fundraising numbers. Businesses large and small (and giant) are eager to get involved with this viral holiday.
So now that you know how worthwhile #GivingTuesday can be for a nonprofit like yours, go ahead and start preparing. The day is fast approaching. At Give Lively, we’re more than happy to help you make the most of the occasion with our free fundraising platform, which includes customizable fundraising pages, Text-to-Donate, Peer-to-Peer, and much more. Now get going before it’s too late!
