Today GuideStar published the 2018 GuideStar Nonprofit Compensation Report, the 18th edition in our annual series. Over the years, thousands of nonprofits—more than 2,400 in the past two and a half years alone—have used the GuideStar Nonprofit Compensation Report to benchmark compensation practices, determine appropriate compensation for specific positions, and protect their leaders from IRS penalties.
Like the previous editions, this year’s report is based entirely on IRS data. The GuideStar Nonprofit Compensation Report is the only large-scale nonprofit compensation analysis to have this distinction. Derived from compensation data reported by more than 112,600 nonprofits for fiscal year 2016, the report also features an executive summary that identifies short- and long-term trends, including:
- Incumbent CEO compensation increases in 2016 approached pre-Great Recession levels.
FY 2016 was only the second year since 2008 (the first was 2015) that saw increases of 4 percent or more.
- The gender gap in CEO compensation persisted.
Median compensation of female nonprofit CEOS lagged behind that of their male peers. The gap occurred at organizations of all sizes, ranging from 4 percent at the smallest to 20 percent at the largest. The 2016 figures, however, represent greater parity for women compared to earlier years: in 2005, the gap spanned 17 percent to 25 percent.
- More women headed nonprofits.
The percentage of nonprofits headed by women in 2016 increased compared to 2005. Women, however, were still more likely to lead smaller organizations than larger ones.
- Mission affected compensation levels.
Science and health organizations had the highest overall median salaries. Religion and animal-related organizations brought up the rear.
- Dedicated HR and IT positions were more likely to appear as organization size grew.
The report includes analysis by gender, subject area (based on NTEE—National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities—codes), state, and metropolitan statistical area (MSA). Holly C.S. Ivel, GuideStar’s director of data services, performed the analysis and wrote the report
